Friday, May 15, 1896 Fine dry weather but still rather cool. Hills still green & flowery. Earliest cherries just ripe. Crop v [very] poor Saturday 16 Cool clear breezy. Not yet balmy or anyway summerish. Went to S.F. [San Francisco] Took down coat to case [in] fit Met Cap. Rodgers, Hittell, Keeler, Dr. Taylor, [Mrs.] Paulsen, Miss Knapp, etc. Sunday 17 Clear bright, but still cold.
Monday, May 18, 1896 Clear cool windy. No summer yet. Helen went to dentist poor child. Tuesday 19 Cold & windy, no summer yet. Wednesday 20 Cool cloudy threatening rain. A dark halo about sunset. Hay makers anxious.
