The dog unaccustomed to such Kindness shrunk back, the old man leaned farther over & fell in a loose flabby massy on the hard pavement dish & dishes following man & chairs. The fat man with the heavy eyebrows & bulging eyes must have seemed frightful in an inverted position & it fled in terror barking & howling in distress for a long time, enough to frighten any bulldog. The severe man jumped to the aid of the fallen more severe than ever & the poor woman also fled to his aid looking very troubled & vacuous with mouth wider open than ever. The feathers in hat trembled in sympathy, but the two friends were unable to raise the good dog feeding gentleman until a waiter also rushed to the rescue he seemed to be tied or glued to the pavement, but at length was brought erect as a policeman was coming to see what was the big matter. 6 It was delightful to feel I was going into the mtns [mountains] in riding to Lucerne though I could see only dimly their outlines. Arrived at 10:30. All the big hotels full, found a cot in a bathroom at Hotel Victoria. next day took steamer to [Vitznau] & thence ascended the Righi Kulm [Rigi Kulm] by rail. Queer steam & cogwheel mountaineering. Grand hotel at top. Many stop to see sunrise, but I stayed all afternoon & saw sunset. The view is marvelous in variety 15 or 20 towns & villages 17 lakes, hills, and snowy mtns [mountains] innumerable & farms like patchwork innumerable. Such variety too of clouds & colors of clouds & of the patches of crops grays, yellows, purples of every tone. The whole mtn & all in sight from top to bottom one mass of coarsely stratified glacial conglomerate. What seems opened [here] of another glacial period. Much of this conglomerate or most of it is composed of pebbles of moderate size & small boulders say from 1 inch to 12 & are not
