46 eyes. Am camped on mor [moraine] covered smaller end of gl [glacier] close to the grand [Thundery] front wh [which] seems yet more imposing on this West side. Have had a fun telling day examining the ruins of the old forest of [Menziesii] Spruce & mtn [mountain] hemlock that no great time ago grew in a shallow gl [glacial] mud filled basin near the SW corn [corner] of the gl [glacier]. The trees were protected
by a spur of the mtn [mountain] that [juts] out here & when the gl [glaciers] advanced they were simply flooded with fine sand & overborn. Stumps by the hundred 3 to15 ft long bark on. Grew mostly on fine blue mud a [structure] of decomposed bark & trunk still in place Some on [rocky] ridge gravelly soil. Most about 125 ft.
