13 climbed Bald Mtn [Mountain] today from camp – Am now at [245] on Summit. A beautiful ptarmigan is on a rock 20 yds [yards] distant as if on show. Red over the eye, a white line not conspicuous over the red. Belly white markings over all upper parts on ground of brown & black, wings mostly white as seen when flying but coverts same as rest of body only about 3 inches of the folded [primary] shown white the width of one feather, also a white spot
an inch long above the top of wing white. [sketch of ptarmigan] Alt [altitude] 4000 ft. Rock amid snow as island. Temp [termperature] in shade 65. In sun 75. Breast seems to have golden iridescent color White under wings also. When spread wings all white save [coverts] close to shoulder that look like brown specks when spread - - allowed one
