[letterhead]Apr 8 1895John Muir EsqMartinez CalMy dear friend,Saturday I read a telegram from the Secretary of my campaign telling me that I must be in Chicago on the 15" inst without fail. An important matter has unexpectedly come up that will require my presence. I regret this exceedingly as wife & I were intending to start for San Francisco the last of this week & make our promised visit to you. When we came here we did not intend to make so long a stay but about a month ago they (certain men who wanted it) commenced bidding up on my lot & 2 weeks ago I sold it for $18,000. & only succeeded in closing01969
