Bancroft LibraryMartinez, Cal. Oct 6, 1897.My dear Mr Kip.On my return from Alaska a short time ago I found you letter & the photograph of the Juneau hemlock. It is a good picture & I thank you for it & also for your kind letter. I had Prof Sargent & Mr Canby as companions studying the forest mostly. We had the state rooms occupied by your party & the Osborns & I often thought of you all as we sailed again through these charming inland waters I should have been glad to have shown you my favroite Yosemite places but the forest as you know by a letter I left for you at the Palance Hotel drew me off to the north. But I see you had a good time anyhow though a short one. With thanks & best wishes & many pleasant memoriesI am very truly yoursJohn Muir
