Martinez, Aug 5th 1897.Bancroft LibraryMy dear Mr. Kip,I did not meet you on the 3d because I was lame with a slight abrasion on ankle. My sister was not feeling well enough for the trip & had to give it up. Much to her sorrow I start for Banff on the Rockies tomorrow to study some spruces thereabouts & perhaps may go with Prof. Sargent to Alaska for another look at some of the trees there. How glad I would have been to be free to go with you to my old Yosemite home. It is now sadly spoiled however. I am greatly disappointed in not being able to meet you from so petty a cause. With best wishes & many pleasant memories I am very truly yoursJohn Muir
