[letterhead]Berkeley, March 21, 1907.Dear Mr. Muir:-It was very kind of you to send me that anxious little note of enquiry. - It touched me greatly that you seemed so much concerned about me. I don't know what the newspapers have said, but, judging by the results, it must have been something terrific. The matter was really not serious at all:- though it might easily enough have turned out quite otherwise. Beyond a few scarcely discoverable bruises, the chief damage seemed to be a heavy muscular strain in the lumbar region. That now is gone, and I should be quite myself, were these not a little "catch" or strain among the tendons of my left hip joint, which interferes with free locomotion. In default of other resource, I have been trying the witches' device, and have been getting about fairly well with the aid of a broom-stick. But a friend has just now kindly sent in his pair of wings (crutches); with their help I am preparing to take flight in more reputable and Christian fashion! So don't worry about me.How are you all. I have wanted to come up and see you. What are you writing now!- the petrified trees?
