87 Martinez, June 18, 1904Dear Mr Johnson. After more than a year I'm home again safe & sound, & rich in notes, specimens, photographs & nerve pictures. After the Crimea & Caucasus, Siberia & Manchuria with the Sargents my main trip began. From Shanghai set out alone for Singapore & India- Had general views of the great cities, temples etc; of the highest Himalaya mountains at Darjeeling, & of the grand Deodar forests about Simila, Left India at Bombay for the Cedars of Lebanon but failed to reach them on account of cholera. Therefore went up the Nile as far as Assouan, & had good look at old & new Egypt. Thence from Port Said went to Ceylon & away to south end of world -
