San Francisco, APRIL 6, 1903Prof. -John Muir,Martinez, Calif.,My dear Mr. Muir:-I am told that you are to accompany President Roosevelt into Yosemite Valley. You are fully aware of the fact that the President is deeply interested in Forests and Forestry. You also know that the Calevaras Groves of Big Trees are in the possession of a lumberman and that thus far, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has refused to permit a bill for their purchase by the Government to be brought up for discussion.It is a question as to whether Congress should purchase the Trees. Many of our best people expressing an opinion that the State should buy the Groves, for a State Park. At any rate could you not call the attention of the President to the condition of the Calevaras Groves, and perhaps through his attitude as implied by his remarks, we may gain an idea as to whether we could rely upon his influence should we present another Bill at the next Congress.This is a delicate matter I fully realize, but the Calevaras Big Trees should not belong to any private person, even if there is no immediate danger of their destruction.
