[illegible]all to themselves they suceeded though without a single argument that was sound in their favor. Perhaps more than nine tenths of the people in the state favor Federal control yet they merely favor it so languidly that they do nothing & say nothing, - while those few pecuniarily interested say & do with all their might. President Jordan is heartily with us, so is Senator Perkins & the Governor & Judge McKenna & indeed nearly everybody & we will I think win at last for things refuse to be mismanaged long. We have made a good beginning anyhow. Possibly the measure will be granted a rehearing.Remember me to Mrs Lukens & Lottie & all your family.Ever cordially YoursJohn Muir
