as to recession of Yosemite to Nat GovernmentMartinez Feb 14 1897My dear Lukens.As you no doubt have seen by the newspapers our resolution for Yosemite recession has failed in the Assembly. I wrote to Melick & others on the recipt of your telegram and got a resolution in its favor from the Sierra Club but not soon enough to be of use at present. I also tried to get Mr. Olney & McAllister to go with me to Sacramento to speak & work for the measure but at length had to go alone, though far from being the right man for such work. I went up last Wednesday only to find that the matter had been desposed of before I arrived. At the noon recess I spoke to a dozen or so of the Assemblymen & most of them said they would have voted for recession had they understood the matter. Melick did not let me know when the vote was to be taken & so the enemys of the measure had the field nearly
