May 2,1902.R.W.GILDER, EDITOR.R.U.JOHNSON,ASSOCIATE EDITOR.C. C. BUEL,ASSISTANT EDITOR.My dear Muir:Parrish has Just been in, and is wondering whether you know any legends connected with the Grand Canon. He is thinking of making an illustration of a little more romantic character than the ordinary set drawing.Of course there will be some of the latter kind also from unique points of view, but there will probably be only four pictures in all.I hope you will not take this article too hard. We want it for the November number, but the illustrations must be made very soon and, other things being equal, we should like to have the paper within a month or six weeks. We are sure that it will be charming and we don't want it to be too long— anywhere from six to eight thousand words would answer our purpose. You see nowadays, in the stress of competition with other magazines, long articles diminish the possible variety, and we have therefore no choice in asking you to keep to the maximum of eight thousand words.I have received your letter of the 24th of April and we have much enjoyed it. There is some probability of our getting West a year from this summer, but before that time I hope to get a few months in Italy. By the way,[02998]
