[Rough draft of letter][Sept., 1900].My dear Mrs. H[oward]:I would gladly go to Tamalpais and a thousand times farther to stay the ruthless destruction of [the] forests you refer to. But, alas, all land thereabouts is private property, and what more can I do in the way of protest and efforts to make public opinion for the defense of the trees than I am doing? I am now at work on a book on the forest parks and reservations which I hope to get out soon.I hope, however, that a block of redwoods may yet be saved for a public park, and will be glad to accept the invitation of your boys to take a trip with that object in view at the first opportunity I can find.[John Muir] 02724
