[1872] Oakland Sept 24.My dear John. Yours of the 18" and one of older date are before me. I sent to Agazziz the one you en- closed. either that or something from the paper (NY Tribune clippings) excited him to say with great [illegible] that "Muir was studying to greater [illegible] & with greater results than any one else had done". Le Conte told me he spoke of your work with enthusiasm. Perhaps you saw the poetic welcome to him from the Bulletin. I suppose Mrs H. cuts & clips the news which belongs to you and gives it to you assor- ted when you descend to such things. I have not given Charlie
