Portage City Wis July 29 /69Dear [Brodan?] I recd the balance due me on that debt yesterday I return you my thanks for the same - also enclose your note - Harvest has just commenced here both in the openings & the prairies [Times?] continue very dull here Money is scarce but we live in hopes of better times in a couple of months [illegible] will perhaps bring us out of our troubles - hope so at [least?] Wheat crop promises big at present - it never looked better Mary & Annie start this morning for [Oconomowoc (where Elder Whitman lives)
