California Academy of Sciences.San Francisco, Jan.10, 1882.Dear Friend Muir:Your idea is good -- nay glorious! (just like you), but excuse me if I do not come up with my finger in my mouth. I've been running hither and thither to find a map of Tulare Co - hitherto find none. Now the only way to speak definitely is to write to the Co. Clerk of Tulare and get a tracing -- probably at the cost of 2 to 5 dollars. Then we can jot the boundaries to purpose. Must ascertain what name to address and go for him. Meanwhile, I've traced from our Curator of Mineralogy, C. D.Gibbs', map-surveyor, etc., showing the easternmost grant to R.R., the provisional ten miles in case they do not get their land within the 1st 20 (alternate sections).This, I presume, is also subject to condition of Gov. reserves, etc. so that this need not obstruct our efforts. Please see how this comports with your suggestion. Will now go to the "Mechanics' Institute". Been, find none, but am certain the whole forest land lies East of all surveys on Uncle Sam's domain. Bounded thus - commencing on line between Township 15 & 16 S. Mt. Diablo at the 30 mile limit of S.P.R.R.out range R. 28E, thence following the 30 mile limit of S.P.R.R. to R. 31, T. 24S., thence E on 6th Standard Line to the crest of the Sierra Nevada, thence north along crest (township range 32E) to Millstone Mt., thence west to the place of beginning.As to troubling one-horse clerks awa'--that was only a cornered and transient thought-- sober 2nd that saith nay -- it's no use! Just got this item to let you see how it comports -- suits me Immensely better.Am obliged to decline your very kind request of a visit, but on some more fortunate occasion I shall be most glad to do so.Yours truly,A.
