William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
"Glacial denudation is one of the noblest and simplest manifestations of sunpower." To illustrate, Muir cites the perpetual cycle of water movement from ocean to snow to ice and finally to water flowing back to the ocean. To decipher the geology of the mountains, he writes: "We may read the letter-pages of friends when written over and over, if we are intimately acquainted with the handwriting, and under the same conditions we may read the written compositions of nature upon the stone pages of the mountains." Illustrated with pen sketches.
