William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
A reprint of no. 443 that was ""published through the generosity of W. Averell Harriman,"" son of Edward Henry. In a foreword, Averell Harriman recalls his friendship with Muir, which began in 1899 on the Harriman Alaska Expedition, and relates Muir's influence on his life, saying, ""John Muir helped me understand nature in all its magnificence and mystery and imbued in me a dedication to conservation. In my active support of conservation in government and in private life, the spirit of John Muir remains as inspiration.""
