William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
""The sleepy little village of Murphy's Camp is situated in the center of a gold basin of extraordinary richness .... [R]emnants of dead fire rivers, and dead water rivers, are developed here side by side within a radius of three miles, and laid invitingly before the student like an open book."" Muir proceeds to turn the pages of this book in his discourse on the ancient river channels. Appreciating the eccentric pioneers, he writes: ""As the heavy grinding of the glaciers brought out the features of the Sierra, so the intense experiences of the gold period have brought the mental features of these old miners, forming a richness and variety of character of which little is as yet known.""
