After describing the caves as found in the mountains and along the seashores of California, Muir recounts his trip from Murphys through picturesque countryside to this Sierra cave. Of his visit he writes: ""Here we lingered and reveled, rejoicing to find so much real splendor in the darkness, such profusion of beauty without overabundance; a building ever in process of construction, yet ever finished; developing from perfection .... ""
