William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

In correspondence with the late Mr. Ryozo Azuma of Tokyo, noted mountaineer and Alaskan explorer who was known as the "John Muir of Japan," we learned that he loaned his copy of Travels in Alaska(no. 333) to Professor Ito of the University of Tokyo. Professor Ito loaned the book to Tahei Tobuse, presumably his student, who translated it into Japanese. It is the only known translation of a Muir book into a foreign language. Mr. Azuma stated that the translation is an excellent one.
