William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
In the article entitled ""Overland for May"" is an excerpt from no. 24, p. 393. Preceding it is this statement: ""Our favorite magazine has run the gauntlet of Eastern criticism, and triumphantly stood the test. The May number is so good as to evoke special praise .... It opens with an article on Mountain Sculpture,' the first of a series of 'Studies in the Sierra' by John Muir, the geologist and the explorer. No man has so closely studied the details of our great mountain ranges and no one, not even Clarence King has more picturesquely described what he has seen. The man who can write like this will not have to wait long for popular recognition.""
