William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
The quotation, taken from no. 299, pp. 325-326, begins, ""One is constantly reminded of the infinite lavishness and fertility of nature, inexhaustible abundance amid what seems enormous waste."" The portrait of Muir is reproduced from an etching by Eilen Dunlap. The portrait has occasionally been removed and framed.
