Dear Child I received a letter from you last monday by mail after waiting two weeks longer than usual. I expect you to write at least once a fortnight. I see you have changed your place No [number] 195 Gideon Foster I make out the name. I want to know why you have changed your place. I hope you have not had trouble as you used too when younger. I want you at any rate to write me every particular why you have left Mr Hogheses - are you in a Tailors Shop learning your trade! I am affraid [afraid] you are growing unsteady you are old enough to curb wandering desires which will in the end only amount to disgrace and even I know you ought to [have] consulted me - for it is no small thing for a boy to leave his place after he has commenced to learn - such a thing is not often known - I shall not say anything about it for I should be ashamed too - so you need not worry but write to me immediately and let me know everything about your new arrangements. It is hard I must always have something to worry me to death - if you have got into a more popular Tailors Shop, where you will have a better chance, why then its very well - write me I say and let me know - or must get Mr Pitman to I see to it - or go myself. I am worryed [worried] enough about Hiram I hardly except ever to see him again your uncle Thomas died almost as soon as he arrived to San Francisco and no one knows whose turn it will be next - if you have any feeling or gratitude or love or respect I may add for your mother write me and let me know all about what your [salutations] are write me soon - in every way I am trying for your respectability and [happiness] will you try in return to do something for your mother to keep my mind easy at least remember everything you do in Portland will be known here.
From your mother CG Ellis
