Dear Child I have an opportunity of writing you a few lines by private convergence. I have read another letter from Hiram dated Aug [August] 14th only one fortnight after the one of July 30th he says they did not make anything out of the voyage- but says he lost nothing therefore he don't much care - better luck next time - hope his expectations will be realized.
I wish I could say I feel encouraged! No I can say I felt verry [very] bad, was almost on the point of writing him to come home. I shall not however he sent a little of the gold dust about ½ ounce I should think. I don't care anything about it - he says he wants me to send him the name of street & No [number] you are on I have forgotten myself, I am going to write, Hiram I want you to write me and let me know street & No [number] where you are.
Miss [Fitns] will hand you this! I wish you to call upon her I think you will be pleased with her acquaintance she resides in Portland and you cannot have many acquaintances I want you to be benefited by good ones.
In great haste from your mother

PS Your uncle Thomas Ellis arrived at S [San] Francisco in ship [Rob Roy] he carried out a great amount of waggons [wagons] - the market is so crowded with these things that they will not sell for enough to pay the freight so much for California Fever
