Introduction/Context/Diagnosis
This is a clinical case presentation for an Oral Rehabilitation project. The treatment planning was done on the basis of devising an 'ideal' treatment plan which was in line with the social, financial and emotional constraints that related to the patient. The treatment was carried out keeping esthetics, function and affordability in mind, as well as a timely execution to avoid affecting the patients self-esteem negatively.
Methods/Treatment Plan
After urgent care (extractions of grossly carious teeth - phase 1) and disease control, impressions were taken for removable prosthesis.
The maxilla was treated with an immediate denture with a reline to follow in six months.
The mandible was treated with a removable partial denture - Kennedy class 1 with a lingual plate.
Results/Outcome
The treatment was completed within the time frame that was given to the patient.
The patient reported an improvement in function and esthetics.
'I was unable to even smile in the past, now i can show off my teeth and i feel so different and confident'
Significance/Conclusions
It is important to execute treatment plans keeping in mind the emotional and intellectual capacity of a patient.
Although ideal treatment plans may either mean ; (a) best suited for the patient or (b) have a good long term prognosis without financial or social considerations - in this case it was thought best to not deter the patient by explaining to them a treatment that was affordable.
Being able to execute a treatment meant managing the patients financial situation which we did by contacting various non-profits and getting them to dispense grants for the patients treatment.
Treatment plan considerations were a decrease in the VDO, previous history of substance abuse and no access to state funded health care services.
