Description
Assessment-driven Student Success in Introductory Biology Courses -- In order to improve student learning, last year biology professor Kirk Land added essay questions to his mid-term exams in Biology 51 and 61, both gateway courses for many majors on campus. Unsatisfied with the results, this year he intentionally added daily "writing wraps" to the course to better prepare students for writing on midterm exams and to encourage "writing as thinking and learning." Not only did this improve student exam results, it triggered a culture shift in attitudes about writing amongst students in introductory biology courses.
