Abstract

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the extent of influence of pre-academic patterns of experience upon verbal and motoric ability. A second purpose of the study was to ascertain the relative merits of language development and perceptual training curricula in overcoming the academic handicap of low English language verbal ability. The study was specifically concerned with: (1) discovering if environmental indices such as parent occupation or frequency of adult-child verbal interaction relate to verbal and motoric scores, (2) documenting any effect of motoric influences upon verbal ability, (3) evaluating verbal and motoric environmental influences for their effect upon scores of motor and verbal ability, (4) comparing the effects of perceptual training and language development curricula with those of the typical curriculum, and (5) evaluating more general academic effects of bilingualism.
