Abstract

Parks play a crucial role in bringing communities and families together, offering outdoor spaces and strengthening social bonds. Currently, Caldwell Park struggles to fulfill these roles. KWIT develops a competitive proposal to renovate the 3.5-acre park and its surrounding roads to improve pedestrian safety and further support recreational activities.

Currently, the park faces two key issues: traffic congestion and lack of park amenities. The Alpine Ave – Allston Way intersection near Caldwell Park experiences high congestion. The 5-legged, skewed intersection creates multiple conflict points that contribute to the reported accidents, many of which involve pedestrians. Additionally, the park lacks critical infrastructure such as restrooms and amenities needed to support consistent public use.

KWIT provides services for a complete renovation design of Caldwell Park, incorporating new amenities such as a 1,600 square feet gazebo, restroom, water fountains, dog park, full-sized basketball court, lighting, and new walkways. KWIT prepares structural plans and analysis for the Gazebo design. Three alternative striping plans are provided to best fit City of Stockton’s design needs.

The Save Mart’s entrance is relocated to convert the Alpine – Allston intersection from a 5-legged to a 4-legged configuration, improving sight distance on the minor road. Traffic modeling software verifies negligible traffic impact and improved level of service at the relocated entrance. A Low Impact Development (LID) plan is developed in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to minimize environmental impacts on the existing park. These renovations increase the park’s ability to serve the public.
