Abstract
Research experiences have a long-term influence on undergraduate students; therefore developing research projects that have positive impact on students' attitudes toward research is extremely important. However, while there is no doubt that we should expose the realities of working in research to our undergraduates, it sometimes can be a challenge to involve undergraduates in research projects that require many years of knowledge and training in a field, especially for faculty members at primarily undergraduate institutions. In this paper, I study the possibility of developing a web-based collaborative research environment to better involve undergraduates at a primarily undergraduate institution in cutting-edge research in a multi-institute, multi-disciplinary setting. Successful stories are presented as case studies in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.
