Introduction/Abstract

Basketball analytics has changed the way teams have approached upcoming games due to data analysis. Teams can better strategize against a specific player to gain a favorable advantage with the correct data. In this study, we analyze the trends on where Stephen Curry makes and misses the most shots to understand his strengths and weaknesses around the three-point line. . Using the information collected from analyzing Curry’s shots, it is our goal to use the data to analyze other athletes as well. The data set acquired all the shots Curry has taken from 2009 to 2019, including the post-season. In this data set, we are given the type of shot Curry has taken, how far the shot was taken, whether the shot was made, and more.

Purpose

The objective is to analyze the data given to help people better understanding on a specific player’s performance and use it to create a game plan.

Method

In order to gain a better understanding of a player’s playstyle, data analysis was done using Rapid Miner and Excel using different types of classification methods.

Results

The result the researcher would hope to find is an area where the player performs worse compared to other areas of the court. By breaking down an athlete’s play, teams can bait their opponents to the area of least success for their team.

Significance

In conclusion, this research aims to help people determine their next go-to strategy against athletes which, in return will help teams gain an advantage over the opposing team.
