Introduction/Abstract
My IGNITE project gave me the opportunity to shadow Dr. Rowena Ramirez and her staff at Golden Haven. Golden Haven is an Alzheimer's assisted living that allows families whose loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer's seek treatment and specialized care with the help of nurses, physical and occupational therapists, psychiatrists, and other medical help. Through this opportunity I learned how to diagnose the stages of Alzheimer's along with the psychological components that may effect a patient with the disease.
Purpose
The purpose of my internship was to gain at the knowledge of diagnosing the different stages of Alzheimer's disease and how it directly and indirectly affects individuals.
Method
My internship allowed me the opportunity to observe Alzheimer patients alongside a certified medical staff during their daily activities. I was able to observe a team which included physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors that diagnoses the stages of Alzheimer's and provided an individualized plan for each patient throughout their stay at Golden Haven. The plan included cognitive, physical, and emotional support to improve quality of life to all the residents.
Results
Through my observations, I was able to gain direct insight on severity in which the Alzheimer's disease affects individuals as well as their family and loved ones. My experience with observing alongside a certified medical staff diagnosing patients has provided me with the skills needed to understand and coordinate an effective care to those with Alzheimer's.
Significance
Through this experience I was able to understand how Alzheimer's disease forms, how the symptoms are managed, and how the quality of life is maintained. This knowledge has provided an expansive insight on the necessary future developments in which this field requires in order to improve research and care to those suffering with this disease.
