CONVENIENT SYNTHESIS OF 1,3-DITHIOLANE-2-THIONES
Introduction/Abstract
Trithiocarbonates (1,3-dithiolane-2-thiones, 2) are used as building blocks in synthesis of versatile ligands and polymers. They also possess radioprotective and insecticidal activities.
Purpose
Development of a new synthetic methodology for trithiocarbonates.
Method
We suggested a new simple procedure for the preparation of trithiocarbonates: a treatment of epoxides (1) with commercially available potassium ethyl xanthogenate.
Results
We synthesized a series of trithiocarbonates (2) by a new simple procedure. The mechanism and stereochemistry of the reaction have been studied.
Significance
A new method for preparation of trithiocarbonates has been developed, which is simple, inexpensive and fast. It does not require catalysts and leads to the formation of exclusively products (2) in good yields.
