Description

Based on personal teaching and working experience at Pacific, the three Communication graduate researchers use communication concepts and theories to analyze cases and events they are dealing with at Pacific. These communication theories and principles offer a set of guidelines for people to use in dealing with various DEI issues. These analytical exercises help the panelists develop a higher level of awareness of important nature of theorizing process in communication studies and offering tactics and strategies to help them effectively work with DEI issues. Their experience sharing is expected to help Pacific graduate students and teaching assistants better understand the functions and effects of communication theorizing and application.

Speaker Bio

Christian Cardona

Christian Cardona (she/her) is currently pursuing her Master's Degree in Communication: Communication Education. She completed her undergraduate studies at University of the Pacific, earning her B.S. in Business Administration: Management and Human Resources. Her current work focuses primarily Higher Education; Student Success and Retention; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and Social Media. In her off time, she loves working out and long-distance running, spending time with her family, and taking day trips near the ocean and CA coast.

Kelly Hutchison

Kelly Hutchison is currently working on her thesis to complete her M.A. in Communication at the University of the Pacific. She is a senior graduate assistant and member of the coaching staff for the forensic team where she is actively involved in coaching both individual speech events and debate. Kelly just received the award for NCFA "new coach of the year" for her involvement in forensics for the 2019-2020 academic year. She has also been a teaching assistant during her time at Pacific, where she has taught both public speaking and interpersonal communication. Her work with UOPI has specifically focused on Pacific's international students. Overall, Kelly Hutchison is thrilled to be able to share her experiences here in Pacific's graduate program.

Amber Mateer

Amber Mateer (she/her) is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Communication: Media and Public Relations. She completed her undergraduate studies at UC Santa Cruz and her current work focuses primarily on the intersections between gender, sexuality, professionalism, and sport. She is a proud cat mom of two orange children, Leonardo Decatio and Aurora.
