Abstract

Do the growing rates of overconsumption in America contribute to negative impacts on mental health? People tend to focus on the positive aspects of consumption like boosting the success of the economy thereby overlooking the negative effects it has on society. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the high rates of overconsumption in America is the result of inadequate handling of stress, peer pressure, trends, and other factors which impact mental health. Drawing on the theories of Karl Marx and Max Weber, I will reveal how capitalism, advertising, social norms, and culture drive people to over-consume, leading to negative outcomes. Through this research I aim to uncover the root causes of overconsumption that lead to severe consequences.
