Abstract/Artist Statement

This research project analyses how book bans and censorship affect literacy and world view of students nationwide. For the project, I researched the history of book bans and explored the ethical consequences of such bans, particularly when minority voices are silenced. My main source material was statistical data from Pen America and informational articles and interviews. Some dataincluded in this project provide a breakdown of banned and challenged books within the United States and why their content has been deemed inappropriate. What I find most important about this project is highlighting the power that literature written by BIPOC and LGBTQ+ authors have on their readers by shaping each student’s relationship with the world.
