Abstract/Artist Statement
My comic book series Evil Woman centers around three adult characters with different yet unique personalities and attributes while providing a glimpse into their underworld-like universe and the challenges they face together. Our characters Sourdough and DeeDee were assigned to recruit Sweetie Su into their group but unaware of who she really is behind closed doors. As I began to flesh out this story and its current characters, I decided to experiment with more new characters to introduce along with more styles and concepts to brand my work.
This would consist of digital cartoon rough sketches to rough color pieces to determine what works and how dynamic I can make the current and new characters. I would begin with concept sketches for the character designs and draw various poses and styles to determine the best ways to present who everyone is. I received much needed critique for my character designs in addition to exploring various designs that would be considered going out of my comfort zone.
Watching cartoons of various genres eventually prompted me to make art with elements I wish to see presented in the media today. I was always drawn to cartoon characters with expansive development and worldbuilding and decided that was what I wanted to create for Evil Woman. These are characters I developed over several years and certainly went through various changes in story and design, but all of them represent a part of me and mean much more beyond the surface level.
