Abstract/Artist Statement
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted many ways in which people are increasingly disconnected from one another – not just physically, but also socially and psychologically. But this disconnect was emerging well before the pandemic; for example Konrath (2010) found that empathy among college students had been declining since the 1970s. To what extent can pedagogical approaches such as service-learning improve levels of empathy among enrolled students? This project analyzes original data from three cohorts of students enrolled in a service-learning class to determine whether community-based volunteerism grounded in a social justice curriculum encourages a students’ development of empathy.
