Abstract/Artist Statement
In January 2019, Visionary Home Builders(VHB) and the teens within their community worked together to create a creative and safe space for teens to utilize: The Diamond Cove I Teen Center. It had everything a teen could want: a basketball court, a patio, a succulent garden, a computer cafe, a music room, a meeting space, gaming consoles, and a movie area. However, since the arrival of the pandemic, the opening of the teen center had been postponed for the past 3 years. A cherished recreational center gone to waste.
This led to the goal of our project: re-opening the teen center. First, VHB started with restructuring how the teen center would be run to ensure safety and organization. This included drafting a new set of rules and regulations for teens to abide by when using the center, implementing a sign-in/out system, and setting up a daily schedule where teens can access the center under supervision. Next, VHB formulated the process of re-opening of the center such as going over the potential partners, costs, ideal dates and times, engaging activities, catering, and promotional strategies. Upon solidifying the details of the opening event, VHB created and distributed promotional flyers, digital infographics, and newsletters to promote the teen center’s opening and ensured that it had all the necessary resources and timelines in place to smoothly conduct the event.
While there was a low turnout, VHB believes that this was an important step towards reaching our goal of creating a safe space for teens to congregate and be creative. With more promotional efforts, VHB is certain that more teens will discover the teen center and find comfort in the safe and creative space that it provides.
