Abstract/Artist Statement

This project addresses the lack of art in education in a local public school. Our presentation features the work we are doing as College Corps Fellows with Lodi USD to create an art club at Creekside Elementary’s after-school program. The program serves almost a 100 kids grades 1st through 6th and it runs Monday through Friday from after school till 6:00. In California, the arts have been losing funding in public schools, which limits children’s access to creative outlets. Our project incorporates a section on arts in the after-school program where students can learn about and create art along with the exercise life skills that art aids with intellectual development. We will discuss the process to create a sustainable after-school arts program as well as our success, challenges, as well as our next steps.
