Abstract/Artist Statement

I designed "Paper Dolls" for the project Do Good Design in which we chose an issue in the world and designed a campaign fighting that issue. I decided on bringing awareness to fans about the harsh conditions faced by k-pop idols. Within the k-pop industry, musicians are branded and romanticized by their companies to be perfect — to be Idols. This not only creates issues with some of the fans that it attracts but also puts an extreme amount of pressure on those Idols to try and live up to that standard. Many Idols have eating disorders, depression, and other mental health issues because of the restrictions from their companies. Using a combination of semi realism and a chibi style I created a juxtaposition between the romanticized characters and the real lives of the idols. I chose to create a k-pop album because they include a variety of printed items along with the music. It also holds an important place within the k-pop community as a culmination of the hard work of the Idols and a product that is used to further push forward the romanticization of the idols. This collection is meant to push fans to ask for legislation and sign petitions to protect idols' basic rights so that their companies can no longer exploit them through their contracts.
