Abstract/Artist Statement
When I reflect on my past experiences and how far I’ve come from them, I automatically think of how my spiritual journey has guided me through it all. I am a born-again Christian of the Pentecost faith and I carry it with me in everything I do - art, music, studies, and my lifestyle. What motivates me to create Resurrection, a series of nine mixed media paintings, is the Holy Spirit itself. Most of what has inspired these pieces is through songs, hymns, prayers, and Christian historical literature. I’ve taken an extensive time out of my schedule to dedicate it to studying about Christian practices. Not only has this method helped me with creating this series, but it has pushed me to further grow in my faith, which is my ultimate goal to complete while on Earth.
These collages were created by using unused Holy Bible pages, handmade paper, acrylic paint, permanent marker, pens, and other acrylic mediums. I was inspired by the events that take place in preparation of the resurrection of Christ. I set a timer for ten minutes before working on each piece. This allowed me to lay down any shapes or figures to work around. I was able to work with around three to four pieces at a time. Moving back and forth from each piece allowed time to dry in between layers. Using paper from sacred scripture and literary works was a challenge; I want my work to come off as beautiful and respectable to myself, my audience, and of course to God. I intend for my work to move others in a way where they develop curiosity about their own lifestyles while expressing my own thoughts and beliefs.
