Abstract/Artist Statement

The title of my project is 'The 12 Percent: Modernization of Law Enforcement and Victim Advocacy.' This project was inspired by my undergrad research project about police officers and public interactions, but most of my research participants were male officers. Historically, law enforcement is a hyper-masculine culture, which has consequently created gender inequality within departments and assisting people out in the community, such as women and children who have endured horrible trauma from various crimes. In the United States, there is a small unknown percentage of full-time female police officers making them 12 percent. This project creates a discussion on why police departments should continue and recognize the importance of hiring more female police officers, how female police officers can be vital for victims such as domestic violence, rape, or molestation, and what the victims endure for years to follow.
