Abstract/Artist Statement
This short Poetic Documentary is a video project encircling the concept of Time. As a full time student athlete for the better part of the last decade, I(B.M.) have learned many lessons about the value of time, and as I began to encroach the ending of my swimming career, I found myself feeling like I was running out of it. Every day I would put my head underwater during practice, and all I had were my thoughts, the sound of the rushing water, the clock on the edge of the pool deck, and my coach cheering me on. This film encapsulates the time well spent, as an athlete and coach bond over their hard work and sacrifices which will finally pay off. The beginning of the film depicts the early morning darkness and cold temperatures with steam rising from the water and the coaches gloved hand. As the scene brightens with the sun rising, the clock moves forward and the athlete’s heartbeat races to the finish line. The film’s audio is uniquely created to tell this story with a merging of all sorts of sounds from the pool deck, the coach’s encouragement and the athlete’s inner dialogue. It is a story about determination, utilization of time, interpersonal connection and the savoring of the last moments of a college athletic career. Time might run out for one's athletic vocation, yet there should be no room left for regrets because we know in our hearts that we made the most of those moments, and that the personal accomplishments and relationships created during this time, can never be lost.
