Abstract/Artist Statement

This is a collection of first-person non-fictional stories inspired by the lives of members of my family. The center story focuses on my grandparents, from their childhood to adulthood. I have conducted interviews, read articles and watched documentaries to include as many details that are true to the Mexican, bracero/immigration experience during the mid to late 20th century, and researched images that are accurately portrayed in the artwork.

The stories are centered to reflect the three main themes of family, love, and faith. These themes ring true to the Mexican culture. The stories portray characters who are faced with great challenges, requiring great sacrifices borne out of their love for their family. It is in those challenges they find their faith tested repeatedly. Yet it is in their strength as a family they find solutions that enable their story to be told.

There are also some art pieces that connect to some of the stories. These pieces are mixed media (mainly watercolor, graphite and color pencils). There are some areas that are black and white, while others have colors. This contrast should inspire the audience to concentrate on the specific area that is vibrant. This is meant to help the reader/viewer in reading the stories, not to distract from the story itself.

I hope that the readers/viewers will be able to walk away seeing the richness of the Mexican culture from stories inspired by my family’s experience.
