Abstract/Artist Statement
This report outlines the duties of an intern at the Martin Gipson Socialization Center located in Stockton, California. The Gipson center is a place that helps individuals with mental illnesses reemerge into the community and become productive members of society. Individuals are provided with various health and wellness classes that help them become a better person. Such classes include: stress management, medication education, social skills, anger management, and symptom management to name a few. The center focuses on behavior analysis techniques to provide optimal service to the consumers. The Gipson center has over 3300 registered members, with approximately 80-90 consumers who attend daily. Given the large number of consumers, interns and volunteers are always welcomed. Over the course of the last three months I have been an intern at the Gipson center where my main role has been to teach the classes offered at the center. In addition to providing classes, I have also had to write progress notes at the end of each class for individuals who are billable. In these progress notes I state what class was taught and what topic was covered in the class. I also have to report whether the individual remained engaged and participated in the class. As a psychology student who wishes to pursue a career in mental health, I have found this experience very rewarding. My experience in this center has helped me gain a better understanding of the kind of work and assistance that individuals with mental illnesses require. Personally, I am satisfied with the internship, the staff offer a very welcoming environment and I would recommend the Gipson center to anyone who is interested in learning more about mental health.
