Abstract/Artist Statement
My film, Sense of Music, is about Antoinette, a foreign exchange student from France who has trouble fitting in at her new college due to her shyness. She is mostly reluctant with making new friends, as she has some difficulty in speaking clearly toward others and often keeps to herself. In a flashback, her shyness comes from a past event from France that has haunted her for a long time. However, she is able to open up through her musical talent in playing the piano, which makes her feel confident about herself. When someone listens to her play on the piano, Antoinette is encouraged to join the music club on campus. She is reluctant at first, but decides to do it despite her fear of stage fright; she is then able to open up easily with other people. When she is asked to perform for a concert, Antoinette plans to bail out because she is afraid of being laughed at, just like before from her past incident. The question remains if she is willing to play in front of an audience or hide behind the stage curtain forever.
This film really relates to me because I am often shy around others and would have a difficult time opening up with them when I talk. I used to play the piano when I was little and I still remember how much fun I had playing these various songs. In my opinion, music has the power to relieve people from their worries and lets them feel free to express themselves. I think people can relate to this as their greatest fear is going up in front of an audience, as well as their fear of being laughed at. This film will help them think about not being afraid of what happened in the past will happen to them in the future.
