Abstract/Artist Statement

The University of the Pacific's (Pacific) Master Plan for 2020 seeks to promote walking across campus. Pacific strives to achieve this goal by connecting the pharmacy, located northern of the Calaveras River, with the main campus. Currently there is one bridge on campus for students and faculty to cross the Calaveras River. A milestone for the long-term plan is the construction of a second pedestrian bridge. As an alternative, Subterra Associates (Subterra) proposes the utilization of a tunnel rather than a bridge. The tunnel alignment will start at the DeRosa University Center, extend underneath the Calaveras River, and terminate near the Pharmacy area. The project requires the construction of two cofferdams to temporarily remove water from the excavation site, excavate a trench along the proposed tunnel alignment, install precast of the tunnel within the trench, and restore the site to pre-existing conditions while protecting the Calaveras River ecosystem. The Calaveras Pedestrian Tube will promote a safer means for students to travel from the pharmacy area and Brookside apartments to the University Center and the rest of campus. The Subterra team will design the tunnel with the expectation that future expansion on the north side of campus will occur simultaneously with this project.
