Abstract/Artist Statement
Saturday Partners in Education (PIE) has brought a very special teaching prospect, allowing university members to interact with children from the ages 6 to 12. As an educational competent, Creativity in Cooperation would like to use art in order to foster a sense of community within the child participants as well as their all day buddies. Since the university's mascot is a tiger, we will be teaching the children about tigers and other animals of the jungle. Afterwards, we will provide material for the children to create their own mural. A part of the exercise is to designate a particular portion of the mural to each child and encourage them to cooperate in order to make a cohesive piece, i.e. asking for permission to draw on another section or figuring out how to connect their different pictures together. As a key learning objective, we hope to have the children understand on a miniature scale the meaning of community and understanding that each action affects those of another. The paper will elaborate on various methods to foster cooperation in the classroom and the role creativity has to facilitate this process.
